The following article examines the view of the mufasir (especially Imam Jamaluddin al-Suyuti, Sheikh Tantawi Jauhari, al-Zahabi and Mahmud Syaltut) tegarding the existence of the tafsîr bi al-ilmi and their arguments, how do four mufasir attitudes and respond towards the verses kauniyah in al-Qur’an? whether these verses are understood in the scientific level, or understood as Hidayah? Given that al-Qur’an is the “Book of Hidayah”. The method that used in this research is descriptive-analytical methods and comparative. The implementation of those three methods have been conducted together. The results of the research revealed that the controversy surrounding the mufasir concerning tafsîr bi al-ilmi appears due to the desire of each mufasir to show the correlation between science and the Qur’an as the holy book of all time and apply modern science that can correct used as a means to understand the greatness of God shown through His verses.

This may be seen from various rituals which tend to emphasize negotiation between Islamic texts and social contexts. Islamic local leaders have succeeded to make the opened-religiosity system like ritual of muludan. Another point of view, merariq tradition still accommodated pesuke which is the dominant culture in Sasak. Based on this view the writer underline that dialectical processes between Islam and Sasak tradition still going on through various local traditions from the past to the present.

This paper tries to explore the compatibility of Islam toward the idea of multiculturalism. The discussion about the relationship between Islam and multiculturalism is very important in the context of plural country such as Indonesia, whether in religion side or in culture one. Knowing the significance of multiculturalism, the question is, how far the compability of Islam as mayor religion in this country with the idea of multiculturalism. As for the writer, there are two ways in making the compatibility of Islam toward the idea of multiculturalism: Firstly, that we need to reinterpret the orthodox religion doctrine that always exclusive and oppressive. The reinterpretation is done in order religion may accept the local tradition wisdom. Secondly, that we always need to have a dialogue between Islam and the modernity. In multicultural perspective, it’s clear that that the existence of local tradition will enrich the Islamic civilization. Each local tradition has the legal position before Islam. Here, the idea of “pribumisasi Islam” in Indonesia context as stated by Gus Dur is in the same way with the idea of multiculturalism.

In 2005 – 2007, religious cinemas wrapped with mystique messages were distributed in Indonesian television and reached high rating. How Islam represented in these religious electronic cinemas show the understanding of Islam in Indonesian society these days. So the questions will be answered by this research is: how Islam represented in Indonesian religious electronic cinemas? The approach is semiotica, applied in exlectic ways, combine Saussurean and Peircian traditions. Some research outcomes were resulted. Basically, Islam represented as irational religion, with some signifying practices: 1. Islam looks into world extremely in black and white views, 2. Ideal moslem is a person that full of surrenderness, always (just) pray into Allah, 3. Islamic preachers and Al-Quran represented in reductive ways just as ghost buster, 4. In Islam, death is scarring, God is the cruelest, his torture is horrible, 5. Repent (asking god forgiveness) is an easy and instant process. These religious electronic cinemas reproduce Islamic popular religion, shows diffraction of urban-city views. The main factor is the commercial logic of television.

As a symbol system, istighosah ritual can be categorized as a part of slametan ritual. However, substantively, it is viewed from its motif and target and also its forms of execution; there is a difference between istighosah and slametan. Slametan ritual is understood as form of syncretism of Java Islam. But, istighosah ritual is assumed as more “genuine”, as a part of traditional santri community tradition rooted from a big tradition of Islam (high Islam) in Middle East. But it is too bad that istighosah ritual has not been studied by observer elaborating study of local tradition and Islam in Indonesia. Finding of this study seems to have a shifting of orientation and also other deep meaning change which can be expressed. At the genuine concept of Istighosah, it emphasizes on two elementary aspect; (1) Target motif and (2) Form of application. Its field study shows the gradual change of “contemporary” istighosah execution starting to exit from this “track”. There is a cultural system change at the group of traditional Muslim entity. To analyze it, this research use the perspective of Geertz’s symbolic-interpretative as a theoretical framework.

This article tries to present the perception of Islam among the ‘rural’ inhabitants. Some consider it as a traditionalist perception. However, the differ-ences between traditionalist and reformist or modernist wings in Indonesian Islamic history are still questionable. This Islamic perception especially deals with its education, not only in the matter of ta’lim, or tarbiyah, but also deals with ta’dib. Since it is limited by available space, this article only focuses on the dinamic aspects of the Islamic attitude and practices of Kiai Haji Hamam Dja’far in reviving of Pondok Pesantren Pabelan. His success makes him known not only in the national but also in the international level, as shown in 1980 when Mr. Hamam got The Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Besides receiving this distinghuish award, Pondok Pabelan also got the fund amount of US $ 10.000., this fund was considered as an additional fund to develop the Pondok Pabelan.
